Playing "alto up"

Hi, I have come across several references to playing “alto up”, which I think means to play one octave up from what’s written. Under what circumstances would you do that? I have seen this done when someone is playing a soprano part on an alto, and some of the notes are below the alto range. But, I get the feeling there are other times this is done?
