Hi – I do yet play recorder but might. I’ve played many instruments including of course the soprano recorder everyone had to play at school in the UK in the 1950-60s, and keep a conical bore Irish low-D whistle in my viola case. None of this is for classical, I play guitar anchoring/sidemanning highly varied sessions with Scottish/contemporary acoustic playlists, and hardly touch my zouk, mandolin, banjo or lap dulcimer as it’s so important to be a principal instrument. I do let the guitar hang on strap and pick up the big fiddle or low whistle for a handful of tunes and songs which let me.
Last weekend there was an antique fleamarket in my town and I picked up a rosewood/palisander (palo santo) Moeck baroque tenor, no box no pouch just the three parts wrapped in newspaper. It’s in excellent condition with no trace of mould, deposits in the bore, or excess chewing. Within my limited ability to plonk fingers down accurately it plays with excellent timbre and volume. The keys did up well with Silvo wadding and the pads are perfect.
As I pretty much got this free, I’m surprised at the value/price of very slightly different, presumably later, Moeck instruments. It needs the first joint re-wrapping to be a bit firmer, and I think an ivorine ring is missing from the that joint which would have match the bottom one.It explains unpolished turning where the ring would have been. May try to turn one or get one turned from holly.
The instrument does not exactly match any recent Moeck Rottenburgher, mainly at the bell. Instead of the usual baroque sweep/curver, it’s a simple straight cone externally with a slightly tapering bore (in the opposite direction).
Any thoughts?
