ParticipantJacqui I tried to go to the link in your signature but I got an error message
You don't stop playing when you get old. You get old when you stop playing.

ParticipantHi Jacqui. I decided to give the thumb rest a try. I think it will be a good aid for me to consistently get my right hand positioned so that I can get the holes covered. I’m thinking that the muscle memory will develop to where I can remove it later if I need/want to. The cost was $4 + $5 shipping

ParticipantThanks, Linden. I went to the url you cited and read the comments. They are mostly negative as to thumb rests. For now I’m going to see if the rest helps me to keep my right thumb consistently in the appropriate position. It that doesn’t work, I’m out $9 so it’s no biggee.

ParticipantInteresting paragraph in that link regarding playing more horizontally. I must try that!

ParticipantI think the idea of using a thumbrest to find consistent finger placement is valid (at least until you are comfortable with where your hands should be in relation to the holes. Once I became comfortable with that, though, I switched to using a finger grip (basically a rubber finger) on my right thumb. (I trim it down to cover the thumb to just beyond the first knuckle.) I only use one when playing my altos, but it keeps the instrument from sliding unexpectedly. I bought mine at Amazon (am I allowed to add a link to a post?) https://www.amazon.com/Lee-Tippi-Micro-Fingertip-Grips/dp/B0031585HQ/ref=sr_1_5_pp?crid=AQYRSE323SC&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.buiUjKsdnbdYbiymjSKgLbyn-lHT0gcv-EF9vILvPKnZZe8ZiKOLaAkzu-pdFhPSnJK8zviLIuQik5Wa2DCkxQ9LGVAiTlbV2ba4A6BbhBCk4YJKMpyLAM8uegYDJqzeILikR6V7Peyg-fBf2m_MLEp9jPzf5M5aTV22tTtwTeWov9zDPu34CoYkBK5qF1UkCbvHswUYOPgsmrg6qCErOXtGtuC5FNRjwLcVEkQsBmq7z0GW59GF2HQRzOcnzoDqvZ5RgBKVp7My1m2NpxNqLfOVCB5aOfpcj-gM_T45ics.rn3H72rbWpevTJXeGeaMM1Ywf5eoB9WUOELRBPl6MIA&dib_tag=se&keywords=Fingertip+grips&qid=1725412511&sprefix=fingertip+grips%2Caps%2C108&sr=8-5

ParticipantNeat idea DC. I have a silicone corn plaster that if I turn inside out has a grippy outside surface (I’ve used it when playing clarinet)
