I think the idea of using a thumbrest to find consistent finger placement is valid (at least until you are comfortable with where your hands should be in relation to the holes. Once I became comfortable with that, though, I switched to using a finger grip (basically a rubber finger) on my right thumb. (I trim it down to cover the thumb to just beyond the first knuckle.) I only use one when playing my altos, but it keeps the instrument from sliding unexpectedly. I bought mine at Amazon (am I allowed to add a link to a post?) https://www.amazon.com/Lee-Tippi-Micro-Fingertip-Grips/dp/B0031585HQ/ref=sr_1_5_pp?crid=AQYRSE323SC&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.buiUjKsdnbdYbiymjSKgLbyn-lHT0gcv-EF9vILvPKnZZe8ZiKOLaAkzu-pdFhPSnJK8zviLIuQik5Wa2DCkxQ9LGVAiTlbV2ba4A6BbhBCk4YJKMpyLAM8uegYDJqzeILikR6V7Peyg-fBf2m_MLEp9jPzf5M5aTV22tTtwTeWov9zDPu34CoYkBK5qF1UkCbvHswUYOPgsmrg6qCErOXtGtuC5FNRjwLcVEkQsBmq7z0GW59GF2HQRzOcnzoDqvZ5RgBKVp7My1m2NpxNqLfOVCB5aOfpcj-gM_T45ics.rn3H72rbWpevTJXeGeaMM1Ywf5eoB9WUOELRBPl6MIA&dib_tag=se&keywords=Fingertip+grips&qid=1725412511&sprefix=fingertip+grips%2Caps%2C108&sr=8-5
